Getting healthcare shouldn't always require rearranging your day for an appointment.

Aviva Medical is now offering asynchronous eConsults for patients across Ontario and the territories, providing a convenient way to access care from a Nurse Practitioner without scheduling a traditional appointment or video call.

With an asynchronous eConsult, you can tell us about your health concern online, complete a secure medical questionnaire and upload relevant photos or documents when needed. A Nurse Practitioner reviews the information you provide and responds through our secure patient portal.

No waiting room. No scheduled video call. No need to take time away from work or family just to sit in front of your phone waiting for an appointment.

FAQs:

What is an asynchronous medical appointment?

An asynchronous eConsult is a form of virtual healthcare where you and your healthcare provider do not need to be online at the same time.

Instead of booking a specific appointment time, you complete your medical information online when it is convenient for you.

A Nurse Practitioner then reviews your medical history, symptoms and any supporting photos or documents you submit. If your concern can safely and appropriately be managed virtually, you will receive an assessment and recommendations through the secure patient portal.

Depending on your individual situation, your care may include education, treatment recommendations, a prescription or advice about appropriate follow-up.

How does an Aviva Medical eConsult work?

We've designed the process to be simple.

1. Choose your health concern

Select the type of care you are looking for and purchase your eConsult online.

2. Complete your questionnaire and select your time in the queue. (THIS IS NOT AN APPOINTMENT TIME)

Tell us about your symptoms, medical history, medications and other information relevant to your concern. You may also be asked to upload photographs or supporting documents.

3. A Nurse Practitioner reviews your information

There is no scheduled phone or video appointment. Your information is reviewed by an Ontario Nurse Practitioner.

4. Receive your response online

Your personalized assessment and recommendations are sent securely through the patient portal.

Our asynchronous service offers a response within 24 hours once the required questionnaire and supporting information have been received.

What can an online Nurse Practitioner help with?

Asynchronous virtual care is particularly useful for straightforward, non-urgent health concerns that do not necessarily require a physical examination or real-time conversation.

Examples may include:

- Stable medication refill requests

- Acne, eczema and other selected skin concerns

- Urinary or genitourinary symptoms when appropriate for virtual assessment

- Sore throat

- Selected minor infections

- Follow-up of previously diagnosed conditions

- Certain administrative such as form completion

- Other common, non-urgent primary care concerns

Every request is reviewed individually. Virtual care is not appropriate for every medical problem, and completing an eConsult does not guarantee that a diagnosis or prescription can be provided.

If your symptoms require a physical examination, diagnostic testing, urgent treatment or another level of care, we will recommend appropriate next steps.

Can I get a prescription through an online NP appointment?

When clinically appropriate, a Nurse Practitioner may prescribe medication following an asynchronous assessment.

Prescribing is never automatic. The NP must have enough information to determine that a medication is appropriate and safe for you.

Some medications and medical concerns require an in-person or real-time assessment and cannot be managed through this service.

Do I need to have a video appointment?

No.

Aviva Medical's asynchronous eConsult service does not require a scheduled video call.

This is one of the main differences between an asynchronous eConsult and a traditional virtual medical appointment.

You provide your information through our online intake process, and your NP communicates with you through the secure patient portal.

If your concern cannot be safely assessed using this format, you may be advised to seek another form of care.

Who can use Aviva Medical's asynchronous eConsults?

Our asynchronous eConsult service is available to patients located in Ontario. Nunavut or Northwest Territories for appropriate non-urgent medical concerns. Because care is provided virtually, eligible patients can request an assessment from communities throughout Ontario.

Is asynchronous virtual healthcare secure?

Protecting your personal health information is an important part of providing virtual medical care.

Medical information, questionnaires, photographs and clinical communication should be submitted using the secure systems identified by Aviva Medical rather than through social media or other informal messaging platforms.

When should I NOT use an asynchronous eConsult?

Asynchronous eConsults are designed for non-emergency concerns.

Do not wait for an online response if you are experiencing symptoms that may require urgent or emergency assessment, such as severe difficulty breathing, significant chest pain, symptoms of a stroke, severe allergic reaction, major bleeding, loss of consciousness or another medical emergency.

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care when appropriate.

Some non-emergency concerns also require an in-person physical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging or other investigations. Your Nurse Practitioner will let you know when another type of assessment is recommended.

Why choose asynchronous virtual care?

For many people, accessing healthcare isn't difficult because they don't want care — it's difficult because finding time for an appointment is hard.

You may be working during clinic hours. You may have children at home. You may live far from a clinic. Or you may simply have a straightforward concern that doesn't require a traditional appointment.

Asynchronous healthcare offers another option.

You can submit your information when it works for you, and your Nurse Practitioner can carefully review it before responding.

Quality primary care, on your time.
