From My Screen to Yours: Why Virtual Care Matters (Especially for Parents Like Us)
Hi, I’m Kathleen, a nurse practitioner, a lifelong learner, and most importantly, a Mum to two incredible little girls. If you’re reading this, you might be juggling lunchboxes, work emails, and possibly a cold that just won’t quit. I see you. I am you. And that’s exactly why I’m so passionate about virtual care.
Where Virtual Care Began
Virtual care, or seeing your healthcare provider through a screen instead of in an exam room, may seem like a new thing, but it’s actually been around for a while. It started slowly, as a way to reach people in rural areas who didn’t have easy access to a doctor or nurse practitioner. Over time, it evolved into a convenient, secure way to connect patients and providers without needing to leave the house.
Then 2020 happened. Suddenly, virtual care wasn’t just a helpful option, it became a lifeline. And for many of us, especially parents balancing family, life, and work, it still is.
Where It's Going
The future of virtual care is bright and busy. We're not just talking about phone or video visits anymore. We’re talking about secure messaging, remote monitoring for chronic conditions, mental health care on demand, and tools that allow us to track your health and respond before problems snowball.
But here’s the thing: virtual care will only thrive if we keep it human. That’s my mission, to make online care feel just as thoughtful, thorough, and personal as an in-person visit.
How Virtual Care Works (and What It’s Great For)
Virtual visits are perfect for so many everyday health concerns, like:
Urinary tract infections
Skin rashes or acne
Pink eye or strep throat symptoms
Birth control refills
Mental health check-ins
Cold & flu symptoms
Prescription refills
You log in, we chat, I assess, and if needed, your prescription is sent right to your pharmacy. Boom. No dragging kids into a waiting room, no scrambling for childcare, no exposure to other germs. Just care, from the comfort of your kitchen table, couch, car or... wherever!
Benefits of Virtual Care
Convenience. Appointments that work around naps, work meetings, and school pickups.
Access. If you’re in a remote area, have mobility challenges, or can't even get out of your pyjamas, you can still get care.
Efficiency. No waiting rooms. No travel time. Just quality care, quickly.
Continuity. You can keep following up with the same provider who knows you and your story.
It’s Not Perfect
I’ll be honest though virtual care has its limitations. There are times when I need to listen to your heart, feel your abdomen, or look into your ears. There are conditions that truly need hands-on assessment or in-person testing.
But for many day-to-day health concerns, virtual care works beautifully. And when it doesn’t? I’ll help guide you to the next best step.
Why I Love It
I’ve been working in virtual care for over seven years now, and I’ve seen firsthand how it can change lives especially for parents.
As a Mum myself, I know what it’s like to be the default parent and the family health manager. I also know that your health often ends up at the bottom of your to-do list. I want to change that. I want healthcare to fit your life, not the other way around.
A Bit About Me
I’m a nurse practitioner licensed in Ontario, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories. I have a Master of Science in Nursing and years of experience in both virtual and in-person care. I also run a small medical aesthetics practice and juggle life with my two sweet, energetic daughters (who keep me humble and very, very caffeinated).
Whether I’m treating a sore throat, adjusting a prescription, or just offering reassurance, I aim to bring compassion, clarity, and common sense to every virtual visit.
Let’s Keep Talking
If you’ve never tried virtual care before, I’d love to help you get started. If you're already a fan, you know how life-changing it can be.
Either way, I’m here on your screen, in your corner, and always just a click away.
